Hello! I thought I'd try a vlog post today...not for the faint of heart as I look like poo. But, I thought it would be a good way to illustrate how I feel every day in the morning. It's the real reality, baby! woo! If you decide to watch; the topic is about our daily EARLY wakeup and how I hate it and hate feeling alone at that time of day. Anyone out there in a similar predicament with a wee one who is an early bird?
(edit) In the video I say Chris lets me sleep in one day on the weekend. ACTUALLY on Sundays I let him sleep in and when he gets up I go back to bed! haha! So, really, I'm getting extra sleep during the WHOLE weekend and not just Saturday. :)
I've been reading your blog since P's nursery was on ohdeedoh, but never commented! Lame, right? Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I COMPLETELY feel your pain. My 9 month old just loves to be awake at all times. We just went through about a 4 month period where he would wake up every 1 or 2 hours at night, up at 5:30 for the day, and then take two 29 (yes, 29!) minute naps until we repeated it all over again. You aren't alone :)

Sally, thanks for your comment. That sounds like my worst nightmare. I had it like that in P's early days, but it steadily improved over the months. I can't complain. I just wish for a 7am wakeup...but I'm dreamin'.
ReplyDeleteI've actually heard that if you put your kiddo to be EARLIER she will sleep later. I know it sounds nuts but maybe it's worth a try to put her to bed at like 5.30 and see what happens. I read that on babycenter.com I think...

Katie,
ReplyDeleteYes, this is so true. Earlier to bed, they sleep later. That's been the case with Paige for sure. Months ago, she was going to bed between 5:30 and 6:00 and she would make it to about 6:00am (max). Over time, it became a 5:30 am wakeup. Now that she's older, she just isn't getting tired enough to go to bed and we can put her down around 7:00-7:30 and it goes well. I have a feeling she's just an early riser and that's when she naturally wakes. (booo) I'm glad she's getting enough rest, at least, but that doesn't mean I have to like it! HA!
Hi Megan,
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. Charlotte was up super early this morning 5:30, and even though that would be a good time for me to get up and get ready for work, it was NOT a good time for Chris, who normally gets her up later since I have to leave for work so early. Plus, today's our anniversary. Cut us some slack, child!
Yawn.
I don't know but maybe this would help: http://jessicaralph.blogspot.com/ See her latest post plus another one on naps where she's had stuggles with her little one.
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem! it doesn't matter when my daughter (almost 15 months old) goes to bed she wakes up at about 5:30. I try to persuade her to go back to sleep--it doesn't work. some mornings she is happy playing quietly in her crib and I can go back to sleep, but most mornings she is awake and ready to go. I am definitely not a morning person so we usually watch sesame street. it is too early for me to function and she loves elmo (one of the earliest things to go as a mom was my belief that tv was evil. now I recognize that sesame street can be everyone's best friend.)
ReplyDeleteYou are so not alone! My son (3) and daughter (10m) both are up before 6 EVERY single day. I am also not a morning person. Ahh the joys of parenthood.
ReplyDeleteOh, honey, I'm sooooo sorry. We were right there for about a year. It was soooo hard. Thea was a horrible sleeper overall - we struggled to get her to sleep at night, to stay asleep, and with those crazy early wakings (5 am). We ended up doing the sleep lady program - and it worked like a miracle. I thought that it might work for bedtime and through the night, but I expected the early wakings to continue. Surprisingly, she started sleeping until about 6:30 am. It is like bliss for me! So, we're getting to sleep what feels like a lot later, but those super-early mornings are still fresh in my mind. Hang in there! xoxo
ReplyDeleteoh - she does have suggestions for early morning wakings, so it might be worth a look. just google "the sleep lady" and you will find it!
have you tried blackout curtains??? maybe P is waking up at the same time everyday bc of the sun starting to rise??? just a thought. good luck! (oh, and you look fab in the early morn!)
ReplyDeleteI had the same issue with my oldest. I tried everything (advice from books, bed later, bed earlier, shorten naps) and nothing worked. He was up between 4:30 and 5am every morning. I just had to accept it.
ReplyDeleteBut when he gave up naps at 3 yrs old, I got this moon/sun nightlight from Amazon. The moon goes on at bedtime and you set what time in the morning you want the sun to go on. At 3, he was old enough to understand that he's not allowed to get up until he sees "Mr. Sun". IT WORKED! And we set the wakeup time 5 min later everyday until he's now at 6am.
Sorry I can't be more help. It sucks.
Hi there, like Sally above, I've also been following your blog on and off since ohdeedoh, but haven't commented. I have to say, this could have been me filming this vlog! My 15 month old daughter Sophie is not a great sleeper and wakes early every single morning. Usually around 4:30 or 5:00. But out of desperation, I give her a sippy bottle of milk and she can sometimes sleep for another hour, but not usually more. Now, I realize this is a crazy thing to do especially given her age, but Lord knows I cannot function that early. She has not slept RIGHT through (without milk) past about 5:30 in a very long time. She's also not a great eater, so I suspect she is actually hungry at that time, but who knows!? The only difference I can see is that sophie still takes 2 naps, one at around 9:30am (for about 1-1.5 hrs), then another around 3pm for about 1 hour. Bedtime lately is 7:30pm (we too tried making bedtime earlier and later, to no avail). I am almost afraid to "mess with" her naps, but I know eventually we'll have to move to one nap. It's just that she gets so fussy in the morning and she really counts on that a.m. nap, I'm not sure I can push it up. When did you move to one nap for Paige? I laughed a bit when you said Paige "screams" when she wakes up; Sophie does this too. No dainty crying for my girl (lucky me ;0)... Anyway, I know it's probably weird talking to strangers like me, but just know that you're not alone :-D
ReplyDeleteLucy thanks for your comment! :)
ReplyDeleteI think Paige went to 1 nap at around a year/13 months or so. Her naps had been at that same schedule you mentioned, but the first one started to hit 2 hours and she started refusing the second one (just cried or played the whole time.) So, I pushed the first nap to 11:00 at first (I would take her out for a walk since she won't sleep in her stroller at the normal nap time to keep her occupied and then would stay outside to play until it was time for the new nap). She'd sleep for about 1.5 hours and that would be it. Eventually, it moved to a 2 hour nap and I was able to push it to start to 11:30. She began sleeping until 5:30 most times. Now, she can make it to almost 6:00 now that her nap starts at 12:15/12:30. It's still a 2 hour nap at this point. It's taken a long time to get here as she turns 16 months tomorrow! My advice if you want to move the nap up a bit, do an activity that really stimulates and interests her when her nap normally begins. But, some kids need and love 2 naps up until age 2, so she may be in that group. (woo!)
