20 Months

IMG_1935

Dear Noah,

Oh my! I am so so soooo sorry that I haven't written you a letter in so long. I feel so bad about it. Let me just say that it's not because I don't love you or worship you. At first, I was lazy and thought "I'll get to it tomorrow" and then a lot of time went by. Then, your next month came along and I figured I'd just do it then. But I realized that nothing new had been going on and I realized your letter was going to be quite boring. Some more time went by and we ended up buying a house and selling our house on the spur of the moment. It was a crazy few months!!!! The camera was packed away for quite a while and now we're finally unpacking, getting settled and getting back into the swing of things. IMG_1991 You and your buddy Maren the Wonderdog.

IMG_1983 You've had a nice summer! You've been running around outside constantly...enjoying puddles, mud, dirt and fresh air. Your kind of heaven! You've gotten, just recently, so much better on your feet. You've mastered being careful on the stairs. You are starting to get good at climbing up the playground rock wall. You love to open drawers, cabinets, and anything else you shouldn't. Such a little dickens! You are endlessly curious about everything you find. I love that about you...even though it also frustrates me so much when you GET INTO EVERYTHING. But I'm grateful for your curiosity and interest in things; I know how good and healthy it is. You are also starting to speak (your doctor was a little concerned that you are behind). Each week you are building your vocabulary little by little. You are speaking more than Paige did at this time and she's a little chatterbox now; so I'm not too worried. Let's see; what are some of your words? "Mama" "Dadda" "doggie" "outside" "cheese" "shoes" "hello" "hi" "bye" "uh-oh" "no no no" "bubbles" "booboo" .

You love to try and blow bubbles (and end up just chewing the wand). You love to dance, sing to yourself, giggle to yourself and swing. You love going for walks in the stroller so you can point at everything you see. You love car rides. You have started loving to read books with me. You love your new backpack and carrying it wherever you go.

IMG_1915

You had sleep troubles for a good chunk of time...let me tell you, it sucked. You were waking up 4 or more times per night screaming, needing to be held, needing milk, needing needing needing. We went without solid sleep for weeks and weeks. It was so horrible. It even got to the point where we would go almost full nights with no sleep. Something had to change. Once we moved into our new house, we worked on the "cry it out" method with you. It's tricky on you because you like to barf when you cry. But, you finally sort of suddenly outgrew the barfs and POOF! the cry it out method started to work! We started giving you your evening milk well before bedtime instead of letting you fall asleep drinking your bottle rocking in our arms. Then, we switched to reading books at bedtime and singing a few songs while you got sleepy. Then, we just let you sort of yell after we lay you in the crib. We'd leave the room and you'd yell for a while until you finally fell asleep. Each night was less and less crying until you didn't even bother crying anymore. We also didn't go in your room at night when you cried at various times. (in the past, I'd go in and you'd just smile and be fine...trying to play me!!!) You are finally sleeping through the night with very little crying. We made sure to leave a bright nightlight on in your room in case you felt fearful of the dark and we know you are fine. Each morning you greet me with bright happy smiles and hugs. It was a torturous process and I hated doing it, but things are so much better now. You are in a great mood all the time now that you're sleeping properly and I finally am regaining a sense of sanity.

Another great part of the summer was the week we spent with your Dad's side of the family at a lake house in Maine. You got to bond with all your cousins who all took such good care of playing with you nicely or watching over you like mother hens. You seemed to have a great time there (despite being in the worst part of your sleep troubles at the time). I just loved seeing you have fun with your family. What great memories.

Noah, you are such a special little boy. You are turning into such a sweet, caring, and funny little guy. Your happy energy keeps me going through the day when all I want is a nap. I love getting to know you. Every hug, every kiss, every smile from you is a treasure in my heart. Thank you for being you and know that I love you more than the world to the moon and back to infinity. Happy 20 months little fella.

Love you always, Mama

Settling In

new house We are settling in to our new home...slowly but surely! We're taking our time and making sure to find true homes for all our belongings. No more just throwing stuff into cabinets to "deal with later." It's even kind of fun! I'm enjoying our new town too. Everyone is so friendly wherever we go. It's just such a breath of fresh air! The kids are enjoying our new back yard space and all the adventure it has to offer. There's lots of big trees, hidden little alcoves, bushes and plants, gardens, swings, a tree house, and a big slide. I'll have to take some pictures of their fun to share here so I can always remember this magical time! Tomorrow is Paige's first day of school for the year...her last year of preschool. She's expressed that she's nervous to start a new school with new kids and a new teacher but says she'll be ok as long as she has her lovey "Buggy-Boo" by her side.

A house and home

countertop clovers Time goes by in the blink of an eye. Truth be told, I'm exhausted and worn. But it's all for a worthy cause--we moved! As the most spontaneous thing either of us has ever done, we put an offer on a really cool house after seeing it at an open house when we weren't even really in the market. They accepted our offer contingent on our current home getting a paid offer within 30 days. Drama unfolded as we prepared our house to sell (staged it and had photos taken all within 48 hours). We put it on the market on the 4th of July and it sold within 3 days. Zoom! It was bittersweet to say goodbye to our first home together. We bought it and got married; and we brought our 2 beautiful children home there from the hospital. We had so many happy times and so many heartbreaks. But we are moving in to a wonderful new space that feels like home. It's much bigger, has great personality, and has so many nooks that make me happy. We are only 20 minutes away from our old house but it feels like we are far out in the country. We are surrounded by wonderful old farms, mature woods, and all manner of nature. I have a renewed esteem for my New England homeland! It's a new chapter and I'm excited to share it here. gardenshot hammock lanterns owl supplies letterpress Meadow in our new town #newengland #selfie

Changing your name

@oliverjeffers books were a huge hit for Christmas...as was her toy penguin

This photo is an oldie but goodie. :)

The other day Paige was curious about why I used to have a different last name (I'd changed it when I got married like many women do). I explained this all to her as best I could so her four-year old mind could follow along. After thinking about it for a minute she lit up with so much excitement and said "When I marry Daddy, my name will be 'Paige Daddy!'"

Her eyes sparkled and twinkled with the idea.

And then I about died from the cuteness.

I love you card

IMG_1293
Does saying "I love you" in French make it mean more? You know, you don't have to wait for an anniversary or Valentine's Day to write a sweet note for your loved one. Sometimes they need a pick-me-up or reminder at other various times too.

IMG_1288
Chris often brings me flowers, or he leaves me cute notes on my "to do" lists, or sends me loving emails. I especially love when he brings me home a Snickers bar at the end of the day because he knows it's my favorite and it's been "that kind of day." I need to do more sweet things for him. Hmmm.

This card is for sale in my shop. I hope you've had a great weekend!

2013 Preschool Concert

#preschool #concert #cute #me&wee
(note the lobster hats...so cute!)

Paige had her preschool concert yesterday and it was filled with cuteness. This is what it's all about.
She was front and center and did a great job! She was so excited to see us in the audience she kept pointing to us and yelling "I TOLD you Mommy and Daddy would be here!!!" Everyone chuckled. I felt my heart bursting with pride during that show. It's so great to see your little one flourish.
A nice woman in front of us told us about how Paige, in the morning concert, helped her little friend up who was sitting on the floor and afraid to sing in front of the group. They said she reached down and consoled her; patting her, and helped her up. Isn't that sweet? They complimented us on how sweet Paige is and it was my first experience seeing Paige through someone else's eyes. Very cool! (We made sure to praise her profusely later that night).

16 months

Dear Noah,

I'm sorry I pretty much missed your 16 month post! It's already less than 2 weeks until you are 17 months. Boo. It's been busy around here and I just haven't made the time. sigh.
You know, your 16 month time is pretty much the same as your 15 month time! No real changes have gone on except you've been playing with and idolizing on your sister more and more. I want you two to be good friends and it warms my heart to see you both together.

Today I was rocking you down for your nap and you put your head down on my chest. You were so warm and heavy in your sleep sack while I felt your soft cheek on my skin. I just closed my eyes and listened to you take each steady breath; I could hear the whisper of your baby voice with each one. So sweet. It's the little reminders just like that...I'm so lucky to be a mom. Your Mom.
I love you always and forever,
Mama

P.S. Here's a little video of you and your sister making the kind of fun you make during meal times. I couldn't figure out how to rotate the movie/you tube isn't cooperating. But you'll get the gist!

Happy Birthday Card

IMG_1181

I made this dachshund print into a birthday card for the shop. I'm happy with how it came out! I'm just bopping along and making things I enjoy...and I'm learning that's what it's all about.

Abstract Watercolor Painting

I wanted to show you my new work! These are abstract watercolor paintings. And I have one for sale in my shop! It is a small 5 x 7 size which means it takes up little space and is more affordable than larger original pieces. Yay!
IMG_1147

I'm definitely going to do more in this style.
The Jackrabbit painting is one of a kind, so snag it if you like it! :)

The bear one is one I'm going to keep for now. Unless someone really likes it; let me know! I can be swayed to sell him too. heee!

Art style and aesthetic

megan carty painting

So! I'm still working on exploring my style and what it is I enjoy making. The other day I looked at this painting I did a few years ago...it's hanging on my dining room wall...and I thought about how much I enjoyed making it. It's an abstract landscape painting done in oil with a palette knife. I referenced a photo I had taken in Italy...I think it was in the town of Fiesole.

I remember when I started painting in oils; I was 11 years old and obsessed with watching Bob Ross paint on PBS. Do you remember him? I loved his voice and he was so gentle and forgiving. He made the whole process seem so attainable. And it was! I enjoyed making magic happen on the canvas but never fully seriously thought I could make a living as an artist. I figured too many people did art and much better than I did! But now, I know better. I know there is room for all of us. We all have something to offer in our own unique way.

I'm wondering about making more paintings like this referencing my own photos I've taken of landscapes from all my travels. It was so fun to paint! Do YOU struggle with deciding the things YOU like to spend time on?
I have a lot of thinking to do! Any advice or thoughts?

Dachshund Art Print

Dachshund Painting

I did a new painting! I'm so excited about it...it's in my favorite color scheme and Maren the Wonder Dog is in her first artwork. I wanted to create something in the aesthetic and "style" I'm going for. It has that sort of retro/vintage happy/colorful vibe that I like. I decided to offer it as a print for sale in the shop as 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 sizes. I hope you like it too!

Stay at Home Mom Style and a story

wiw_0515

It's been a while since I've done one of these! Winter was blah and to be honest, I wore my pajamas almost every day. I just couldn't get out of my own way! Now that the better weather is here, I'm going to try and make a better effort again! Play along with us all here.
Here I am in my casual outfit for running around all day after a 16 month old toddler. Nothing earth shattering, but it's a new shirt from Anthropologie that I love...it's loose, comfy and hides my tummy pouch. Score! See how I'm casually holding a rusty watering can? I wanted to look rustic for you. (p.s. I don't garden...hence the rust on the aforementioned watering can).

And now that my latest Mom outfit has been displayed, I must tell you this: Waking up at 3:00 in the morning to see your little child standing silently and staring at you from 5 feet away is terrifying. I startled awake from a deep sleep and saw this figure in the curtain. It was a solid mass; and was just staring at me. "Paigie?" I whispered. No answer. "Paige!" I whispered more purposefully this time. Still no answer. Then I shut my eyes and thought to myself: "What if the ghost from that haunted restaurant we ate at earlier attached itself to me and followed me home??!!!!" Don't make fun of me; I was still foggy from sleep! I've seen a lot of Ghost Hunters and Haunted Collector episodes in my day. (perhaps not a good idea?)

Anyway, I ended up reaching out and Paige finally moved toward me and mumbled something about not being able to find one of her 10 billion lovies in her bed. Phew! Relieved it wasn't a ghost, I got out of bed and helped her locate the missing lovie (it was right next to her pillow all along, dammit!).
I've had friends tell me similar stories in the past and I always wondered why it would be so scary to have your child wake you up at night. Now I get it. I just need to remember that here, 3 am is not "dead time" but "missing lovie pain in the arse time."

And for no real reason, here is a quick sketch I did in my book the other day:

Journey toward my artistic style and aesthetic

Like I said the other day, I'm trying to figure out my artistic aesthetic and style. I recently went on a shopping trip and realized a lot of the clothes I bought (thanks for my Mother's Day gifts Chris!) seem to have a similar style. That can't be coincidence! So, I went around my bedroom and took a few pictures with my iphone of a few of my favorite new clothes, little color combos I like, and objects I love. I'll have to do this around the rest of the house! I can definitely see a theme standing out. Yay! Here are some of the photos so you can see what I mean. Thanks for joining me and humoring me!

Lovely Spring

51911de5aec0a62e94000059

I'm just loving the great weather we've been having. I'm enjoying it while we can; before it gets too hot out!
How have you been? I'm good. Taking care of the kiddos and working on my shop in between. Things tend to be hectic lately... I guess I'm not very good at having balance so I need to work on that.
In the midst of all my shop stuff I'm trying to work on pinpointing exactly what it is I want to be making (I'm a bit all over the place) and what exactly my art style/aesthetic is (I'm a bit all over the place with that too.) So, I'm doing a lot of sketchbook work and list-making. I'll get there!
What are you up to?

A short walk

My almost daily walk to our little village post office takes only about 2 minutes. But it's packed to the brim with the most beautiful sights and sounds. Trees everywhere bursting with blooms, birds of all kinds singing their songs, the soft breeze blowing through the grass. I love this time of year. It's so wonderful to stop and enjoy the blessings around us. Shipping orders to my awesome customers COULD be a chore; but isn't thanks to the loveliness along the way!
